(1875-1965) Alsatian French theologian, philosopher, physician, music scholar. Missionary physician founded Lambaréné Hoispital in French Equatorial Africa (Gabon) 1913, for which he received 1952 Nobel Prize for Peace. Wrote in several fields, specialist in work of Bach. 5 ¼ x 6 ¾ ADS in French, Lambaréné, Gabon, July 13 1958, headed “Attestation”, signed in body and at conclusion. Dr. Schweitzer certifies that in cases taxes should be levied against Dr. Margrieta van der Kreek, doctor of medicine at his hospital who is taking leave of absence, after her departure, hospital will vouch for their payment. Hospital stamp at top right. Dr. Margrieta van der Kreek was Dr. Schweitzer Chief of Medical Services at the Hospital from 3/55-8/60. The Hospital was equipped and maintained by Schweitzer’s own income originally, later supplemented by gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations in many countries. By 1963 it served 350 patients and families and 150 patients at a nearby leper colony, with 36 physicians and nurses and native workers.
