Abbot, Charles Greeley |
Notable astrophysicist, astronomer, Smithsonian Secretary 1928-44 |
 |
Description: (1872-1973) American astrophysicist, astronomer, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Hired by Samuel P. Langley in 1895 as an assistant at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory after graduation from MIT, as Langley focused on aeronautics experiments, Abbot took responsibility for the observatory's solar observations. He designed and built devices for measuring solar radiation, including a greatly improved bolometer which was used to measure the Sun's inner corona at the 1900 solar eclipse in Wadesboro, No. Carolina. He used improved techniques to come up with a more accurate value of 1.93 cal/cm²/min for the solar constant (modern value is measured in watts per square meter), completed mapping of the infrared solar spectrum and carried out systematic studies of variation in solar radiation, its relation to the sunspot cycle, and its effect on weather variation. He also studied the nature of atmospheric transmission and absorption. Abbot perfected various standardized instruments now widely used for measuring the sun's heat, and he invented devices utilizing solar energy. Abbot succeeded Langley as SAO director on his death 1906. In 1918 Abbot became Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian, and pushed funding for rocket pioneer Robert Goddard during WW I, to his disappointment canceled at end of the War. As Secretary 1928-44, guided Smithsonian through the Depression and WW II. Abbot crater on the Moon is named after him; exception was made to name it for him while he was alive. Obtained his last patent at 101, oldest inventor to ever receive a patent.
