(1791-1865) Popular and influential American author and poet, often preoccupied with theme of death, published 67 volumes in over 50 years. She was active in cause of higher education for women. AQS "L. H. Sigourney" on 4 x 6 ¼ slip with embossed design top right: “Walk thoughtful on the silent, solemn shore/of that vast Ocean, you must sail so soon”. Adds Hartford, Oct. 30th 1844 below. Sigourney ever slightly misquotes the 1742 opus “The Complaint, or Night Thoughts on Life, Death” by English poet Edward Young (1683-1765): "Age should fly concourse, cover in retreat defects of judgment, and the will subdue; walk thoughtful on the silent, solemn shore of that vast ocean it must sail so soon."

Condition: Very good, 2 folds, lower right corner nick, mount remnants verso, top corners slightly stained
