(1767-1848) Son of John & Abigail Adams. Diplomat, Mass. Senator 1803-08, declined appointment to Supreme Court 1811. A negotiator of the Treaty of Ghent to end War of 1812, Secretary of State 1817-25 (Monroe), negotiated northern boundary with British 1818 and largely formulated Monroe Doctrine 1823. President 1825-29. Mass Rep. 1831-48. 6 ¼ x 8 ALS “J. Q. Adams” while Mass. US Rep., Washington, April 11 1839, to James C. Deane, Cohasset, Mass. Rep. Adams encloses (not present here) a pension certificate for 5 years for Mrs. Abigail Lincoln, commencing March 4, 1838 at rate of $28.33 per year.
