Description:
(1789-1851) American author best known for stories of frontier life and pioneer adventure. His most popular work is The Last of the Mohicans (1832). His father founded Cooperstown, near New York’s Otsego Lake in and moved his family there in 1790. Sent to Yale at 13, he was expelled in his 3rd year and sent to sea, partly in the merchant marine, and then as a midshipman in the US Navy. The 2nd of his 50+ books, The Spy (1821), a patriotic story of the American Revolution, was an immediate success. In 1823, he published The Pioneers his 1st frontier adventure. In Natty Bumpo, the hero of his "Leatherstocking" novels, Cooper created the archetype of the rugged frontier woodsman. Among Cooper's noted works are The Deerslayer (1840) and The Pathfinder (1841). 2 ¼ x 6 part printed DS completed in Cooper’s hand, Cooperstown, NY, September 10 1842, Otsego County Bank check paying $5 to “self”. In 1842 Cooper published The Two Admirals (a novel on the 1745 Scottish uprising, taking place in England & The English Channel) and The Wing-and-Wing: Le Feu-Follet (Jack o’ Lantern) (a novel set on the Italian coast during the Napoleonic Wars).

Condition: Very good, red circular “PAID” stamp over 1st half of the dark signature but does not obscure it – good contrast
