(1914-2002)Austrian-born organic chemist-molecular biologist, at Cambridge University from 1936. In October 1947, named head of the new Medical Research Council Unit for Molecular Biology, with J.C. Kendrew representing its entire staff, until he became Chairman of the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in March 1962. Studied hemoglobin from 1938 until the early 50’s, with protein chemistry research done at Molteno Institute and X-ray work at the Cavendish Laboratory. Co-recipient of 1962 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with J. C. Kendrew for their studies of the structures of globular proteins. Perutz is also known as the supervisor of James D. Watson and Francis Crick during the early 1950's, during which time Watson and Crick determined the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).
