Description:
(1840-1913) New York City-born merchant and art collector, son of Bavarian Jews who emigrated to America in 1835. Opened drygoods business in NYC 1865, moved to Fifth Ave. and 34th St. 1906, and formed the firm of B. Altman & Co. (incorp. 1913, closed 1989). Shortly before his death, he established the Altman Foundation, which donated his $20,000,000 art collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Construction of the 5th Avenue store began in 1905, the store opened in 1906. The Madison Avenue end was added in 1914. Altman never saw the completion of his entire city-block store, the first large-scale department store on Fifth Avenue, given landmark status in 1985. Harnett, signed by Altman at lower right.
