(1888-1972) NYC lawyer from 1917, Municipal Court judge, US Representative to League of Nations Commission to Study the Legal Status of Women 1938-40, 1st delegate to UN Commission on the Status of Women 1947-50. On National Board of ACLU 1930-72, single-handedly persuaded it to take on sex discrimination cases. Opposed Equal Rights Amendment claiming women needed special protections, opposed restrictions on abortion. Worked in war on poverty, civil rights, anti-Vietnam War, Women’s Liberation, and legal services for the poor. TLS on 10 x 8 personal law offices letterhead, New York, January 3 1951, sending two autographed envelopes to an Ohio girl.
