Description:
(1819-1885) NY US Rep (D) 1853-55 (strongly opposed 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act, tried to persuade President Pierce and Secretary of State Marcy to oppose it, defeated for reelection), a founder of the Republican Party, friend of Abraham Lincoln. US Rep 1857-65 (R), Governor 1865-68 (worked to remove tuition charges for public education, helped establish 6 schools for training teachers, signed Cornell University charter), US Senate 1869-75. Known as "the soldiers' friend" for efforts to help returning Civil War veterans. In 1872 opposed President Grant and joined short-lived Liberal Republican Party. 8 x 5 ALS “R. E. Fenton” while NY Whig US Rep, House of Representatives (Washington), February 14 1859, 2pp (2 leaves), regarding his correspondent’s petition, not likely to be reported upon in the current session of the House, does not recommend attaching it as a rider to an appropriations bill, as his correspondent suggests. Fenton assures him he is paying attention to his interest. In postscript adds that committee report has not been ordered published.
