(1880-1959) US Army Chief of Staff 1939-1945. On Dec. 16, 1944, Marshall became the first American 5-star General of the Army. China mediator 1945-47, Secretary of State 1947-49, originated Marshall Plan (European Recovery Program) 1947; Secretary of Defense 1950-51; Nobel Peace Prize 1953. TLS on 10 ½ x 7 ¼ red 5-star letterhead, Pinehurst, No. Carolina, February 15 1949 (3 weeks after leaving the State Department), to Hon. Joseph C. Grew, Washington. General Marshall thanks Grew for inviting him to the Washington National Monument Society annual luncheon. Marshall has already written Gen. Grant regarding his inability to attend and suggested to Grant that Senators Vandenberg and Connally fill the two existing vacancies in the Society’s membership. Joseph C. Grew (1880-1965) entered diplomatic service 1904. As Under Secretary of State in 1924, supervised establishment of the new Foreign Service. Ambassador to Turkey 1927–32, Ambassador to Japan 1932 until after attack on Pearl Harbor. Special Assistant to Secretary of State Hull 1942–44, again Under Secretary of State 1944–45. Acting Secretary for most of late Jan. 1945-early Aug. 1945. U. S. Grant III (1881 -1968) Grandson of President Grant, American soldier and planner. Arthur H. Vandenberg (1884-1951) US Senator (R-Michigan) 1928-51, abandoned isolationism to become an architect of a bipartisan foreign policy, chaired Senate Foreign Relations Committee 1947-49. Tom Connally (1877-1963) US Senator (D-Texas) 1929-53, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee 1941-47, 1949-53.
