(1831-1898) Mississippi lawyer, Confederate major general, post-War US Senator. Rose from CSA lieutenant to major general, named colonel of 29th Mississippi April 1862, brigadier general Dec. after Corinth. Led brigade at Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain & Missionary Ridge, where he was wounded. Major general June 1864 during Atlanta Campaign, with Hood at Franklin and Nashville. Appointed to US Senate (D) to fill vacancy caused by resignation of Lucius Q.C. Lamar, served Mar. 9, 1885, to Jan. 24, 1894, and Mar. 4, 1895 until death. Post-War DS, 3 x 8 printed receipt for one copy of Atlas of Chicamauga and Chattanooga battlefields from Chicamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commission.
