(1877-1967) Hungarian-born Jewish pediatrician, taught at Vienna 1902-23, discovered Schick test for determining susceptibility to diptheria 1913. To US 1923, chief of pediatrics at NYC’s Mt. Sinai Hospital & clinical professor of childhood diseases at Columbia University 1923-42. Wrote on tuberculosis, scarlet fever, newborn nutrition, etc. ISP, 10 x 8 photograph of a pencil portrait by Leo Katz, inscribed & signed with sentiment dated April 1965. Leo Katz (1887-1982) Artist, trained at Vienna’s Fine Arts Academy 1905-09. Continued studies while painting portraits 1910 -14. Completed first mural in 1913 at a Moravian castle. Did many famous portrait studies 1915-21 incl. those of the Frank Vanderlip family, who later sponsored his trip to the US. Taught first courses on Modern Art at Metropilitan Museum in NYC and completed one-man show of portaits at National Gallery of Art in Washington. In 1932 asssisted Jose Clemente Orozco in his work on frescoes at Dartmouth College. In 1933 completed 1,800 sq. ft. mural at Chicago World’s Fair. Active in printmaking 1934-46. With Lotte Jacobi, saw parallels between print making and photography. Taught photography at Spelman College, wrote articles on photography.
