(1815-1898) English physician, discovered distinction between typhus and typhoid, physician to Queen Victoria & Prince of Wales. Member of Royal College of Surgeons 1837, fellow of the Royal College of Physicians 1852. In 1847 began investigations into cases of continued fever at London Fever Hospital which enabled him to make distinction between typhus and typhoid on which his reputation as a pathologist principally rests. In 1849 appointed Professor of Pathological Anatomy at University College, and also Asst. Physician to University College Hospital, where he afterwards became Physician 1854-1876 and Consulting Physician 1879, also held similar appointments at other hospitals. Holme Professor of Clinical Medicine & Professor of the Principles and Practice of Medicine at University College London. President of Royal College of Physicians 1881-1888; elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1864, honorary degrees from Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and Edinburgh. In 1861 appointed Physician Extraordinary, and in 1862 Physician in Ordinary, to Queen Victoria, and, in 1863, Physician in Ordinary to the Prince of Wales; attended both the Prince Consort and the Prince of Wales in their attacks of typhoid fever. Created Baronet 1868. Frameable Autograph Sentiment Signed (“Yours very truly/ W. Jenner”) on 2 x 4 ½ slip, ink identification as “Physician to The Queen and President of the Royal College of Physicians” neatly inked on verso in other hand.
