(1866-1954) Navy Secretary 1929-33 (Hoover), well-known yachtsman. Great-grandson of President John Quincy Adams, great-great-grandson of President John Adams. Also great-grandson of Navy Secretary Benjamin Crowninshield and grandson of Charles Francis Adams, Sr. Mayor of Quincy, Mass. 1896-97. In 1920, skippered America's Cup defender “Resolute” and soon became known as the "Dean of American Helmsmen". He was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame (1993). The Charles Francis Adams Memorial Trophy for yacht racing established in his memory. As Navy Secretary 1929-33, promoted public understanding of Navy's indispensable role in international affairs, and worked to maintain naval strength and efficiency during the Depression. At 1930 London Naval Conference, he successfully maintained principle of US naval parity with Britain. SP, 10 x 8 bust photograph in high collar (likely while Secretary)
