(b. 1948) Latvian-Soviet born American dancer, choreographer, and actor. With Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev, one of greatest 20th century ballet dancers. With Leningrad’s Kirov Ballet from 1967, defected to Canada 1974 for more opportunities in western dance; in first 2 years after defecting, danced with 13 different choreographers, including Jerome Robbins, Alvin Ailey, and Twyla Tharp. Principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre 1974-78, where he notably partnered with Gelsey Kirkland. Danced with the New York City Ballet under George Balanchine and as a regular guest artist with the Royal Ballet. Associated with modern dance, premiered dozens of new works, inc. many of his own. His success as a dramatic actor on stage, film & TV helped him become the most widely recognized contemporary ballet dancer. Returned to ABT as dancer and artistic director 1980-90, naturalized US citizen 1986. Artistic director of White Oak Dance Project, touring company co-founded with Mark Morris, 1990-2002. In 2006, launched the Baryshnikov Arts Center in NYC. US TV dance debut 1976, on PBS’ “In Performance Live from Wolf Trap”. During 1977 Christmas season, CBS brought his ABT production of “The Nutcracker” to TV, most popular and most often shown TV production of the work in the US. He performed in two Emmy-winning TV specials in which he danced to music from Broadway and Hollywood. Performed in his 1st film role, in 1977 film “The Turning Point” for which he received an Oscar nomination. Appeared in “Terms of Endearment” 1983, “White Nights” 1985, “Dancers” 1987 and “Company Business” 1991. Appeared in last season of TV’s “Sex and the City”, playing Russian artist and love interest for Carrie Bradshaw. Received 2000 National Medal of Arts & Kennedy Center Honors.
