Description:
(1890-1961) “Engine Charlie”, General Motors Corporation president 1941-53, Secretary of Defense 1953-57 (Eisenhower). Led GM’s huge defense production effort in WW II which earned him a 1946 Medal of Merit. In 1944, as Director of War Production Board, told Army Ordinance Board that to prevent return to the “Great Depression”, the US needed "a permanent war economy." This evolved into the modern “military-industrial complex”. At his confirmation hearing, he testified that “…for years I thought what was good for the country was good for General Motors and vice versa." SP, 2/19/51 colorful TIME magazine cover portrait mounted on 10 ¼ x 7 ½ black-lined red bordered card; under portrait he has written: “From “Time” Magazine Cover -/at a very critical period in/the nations history./[signed]”, dated May 7 1952 by him at lower left.
