(1636-1701, Richard Coote, “The Lord Coote” 1683-89) Irish-born colonial Governor of New York 1698-1701 and of Massachusetts 1699-1700. Succeeded his father as 2nd Baron Coote 1683, MP 1689-95. One of first to join Prince of Orange 1688, attainted by Irish Parliament of King James II May 1689. King William III & Queen Mary II created him Earl of Bellomont 1689, and granted him 77,000+ acres of forfeited Irish lands. Treasurer to the Queen 1689-93, commissioned Royal Governor of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York 1697. Began administration in New York spring 1698, did not assert dominion over Massachusetts until May 1699, when he presided in person as Governor. While in Boston he lived in the Province House. Bellomont was primary sponsor of Captain William Kidd's charter as a privateer 1695. When charged with piracy, Captain Kidd came to Boston to enlist Lord Bellomont's support. Bellomont promptly arrested him in 1699, Kidd was given a brief hearing, returned to London, found guilty of piracy, and hanged 1701. Bellomont's attempt to govern 3 distant territories took a toll on his health and he succumbed to severe case of gout 1701.
