(1806-1876) Virginia US Rep 1833-44, Minister to Brazil 1844-47, Governor 1855-60. Wise County, Virginia, was named after him when it was established in 1856; for his support for the annexation of Texas, Wise County, Texas, was named in his honor. One of his last official acts as Governor was to sign the death warrant of John Brown. Member of the 1861 Virginia secession convention. CSA brigadier general 1861, commanded District of Roanoke Island during the Battle of Roanoke Island. His forces were attached to Maj. Gen. Theophilus H. Holmes’ division during the Seven Days Battles. For the rest of 1862 and 1863 he held commands in No. Carolina & Virginia. In 1864 Wise led a brigade in the Department of No. Carolina & So. Virginia. His brigade defended Petersburg and was credited with saving the city at the 1st Battle of Petersburg and to an extent at the 2nd Battle of Petersburg. Commanded a brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia during the final stages of the Siege of Petersburg, promoted to major general after Sayler's Creek. With Lee at Appomattox Court House, urged Lee to surrender. He was the brother-in-law of Union Maj. Gen. George G. Meade. 5 x 4 ALS while Governor, Richmond, October 25 1856, cheerfully complies with request for autograph from L. B. Prince. Tipped at left edge to 10 x 8 sheet neatly printed “Gov. Wise/of/Virginia” in red ink at top. LeBaron Bradford Prince (1840–1922) NYC-born Governor of New Mexico Territory 1889-93. NY Delegate to 1868 GOP Convention, State Assemblyman 1870-74, State Senator 1876-77. Justice of New Mexico Territorial Supreme Court 1878-82, member of Territorial Council 1909, delegate to 1911 state constitutional convention.
