(1929-2018) American musical theatre composer best known for composing the music for the longest running musical in history, “The Fantasticks”, which ran off-Broadway 1960-2002 for a total of 17,162 performances. All of Schmidt's major musicals were written with lyricist Tom Jones whom he met while both were students at the University of Texas. He also collaborated on the 1995 feature film adaptation. In 1992 he received the Tony Award for "The Fantasticks," then in its 33rd year. Its most remembered songs are "Soon It's Gonna Rain" and Try To Remember". The team followed with the 1963 Broadway musical “110 in the Shade” which ran for 330 performances and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Composer and Lyricist for Schmidt and Jones.” I Do! I Do!” followed in 1966 with Mary Martin and Robert Preston in a 2-person musical which ran for 560 performances. Jones and Schmidt were nominated for the Tony Award for Best Composer and Lyricist and Best Musical. Schmidt and Jones were inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1998. The show closed in June 2017 having been on New York stages for much of the last half-century! "Try to Remember" and "Soon Its' Gonna Rain" were two of "The Fantasticks" most well known songs.
