Description:
(1899-1984) Conservative Alabama Democrat, House of Representatives 1937-46 and the US Senate from 1946-79. The 1943 Sparkman Act, which allowed women physicians to be commissioned as officers in the armed forces, was named for him. He was the Democratic nominee for Vice President as Adlai Stevenson's running mate in 1952. In 1956, he was one of 82 representatives and 19 senators who signed the Southern Manifesto, opposing the 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education and racial integration. ISP, 6 x 6 color magazine portrait mounted on 10 x 7 red and black striped heavy off-white paper, inscribed below portrait with sentiment and dated July 31 1953.
