Description:
(1885-1954) American cartoonist, created “Mutt and Jeff”, first successful US daily comic strip; successful thoroughbred racehorse stable owner. He worked as a journalist and sketch artist in the sports department of the San Francisco Chronicle after college. In late 1907, he introduced a comic strip character named Mr. A. Mutt and in March 1908, he added the diminutive Jeff, the opposite of the tall and skinny Mutt. “Mutt and Jeff” was so popular that Fisher, who copyrighted the characters, received an offer to produce it for Hearst’s San Francisco Examiner that exposed the strip to new readers across the US. In 1911, Nestor Studios of New Jersey acquired the right to make “Mutt and Jeff” short film comedies. Fisher decided he could make more money controlling film production himself, so, iIn 1913, he created the Bud Fisher Film Corporation and signed a deal with American Pathé. They made 36 “Mutt and Jeff” short comedies in 1913, but production ceased for 2 years when Fisher's copyright was challenged. The courts upheld his copyright, the comic strip was syndicated nationally, and his company created 277 “Mutt and Jeff” shorts 1916-26. Fisher is almost exclusively credited as writer, animator and director, although most animation was by Raoul Barré & Charles Bowers. “Mutt and Jeff” was also published in comic book form and he became a wealthy man. Fisher acquired a large stable of Thoroughbred racehorses. In 1924, his “Nellie Morse” became the 4th filly (of 5 total as of 2009) to win the Preakness Stakes and his colt “Mr. Mutt” finished 2nd in the Belmont Stakes. In 1932, he authorized Al Smith to produce the strip under his supervision. Smith drew “Mutt and Jeff” for 48 years. When Fisher died, Smith signed his own name and continued the strip until 1980 when George Breisacher took over for its final 2 years. Frameable 2 x 3 ½ card signed “Bud Fisher” and, below, his artistic signature “Fisher” used in his “Mutt and Jeff” cartoons.
