Description:
(1920-1988) One of the greatest Washington lawyer-litigators, fixers & insiders, notable “white collar” criminal lawyer, founded law firm of Williams & Connolly. He represented many high profile clients including Frank Sinatra, financier Robert Vesco, Hugh Hefner, Jimmy Hoffa, organized crime figure Frank Costello, Senator Joseph McCarthy, Michael Milken, the Washington Post, Rev. Sun Myung Moon, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Maryland Gov. Marvin Mandel, John Connally, Armand Hammer, Robert Strauss, etc. Owner of the Washington Redskins 1969-81, and the Baltimore Orioles 1980-88. Brief TLS on his 11 x 8 ½ Washington, D.C. law offices letterhead, April 5 1958, to a NYC collector, thanks him for his “very gracious” letter. With envelope. Written after the 1957 bribery case of Teamsters Union chief Jimmy Hoffa. His critics complained that Williams won Hoffa’s acquittal partly by having boxer Joe Louis, an idol in the Black community, walk up to Hoffa in a brief recess and, in view of the majority Black jury, give him an affectionate hug. As a result of the Hoffa victory, Williams won a $50,000/year contract as general counsel to the Teamsters Union.
