Price: $2750.00 Special Offer - $2500.00

Description:
(Samuel L. Clemens ,1835-1910) One of America’s greatest authors, renowned humorist, journalist, and lecurer. His great works include: Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, etc. 8 ¼ x 5 ½ ALS “SL Clemens”, Hartford (Conn.), March 19 1890, to Andrew Chatto of Chatto and Windus Publishers, 214 Piccadilly, London W, England, his English publishing house. Clemens writes about his works being translated into Italian, providing some wonderful insight into his feelings about some of his earlier writings: “Dear Mr. Chatto, Mr. Romasso has made translations of some of my sketches, and wishes to publish them in Italy, but I necessarily refer him to you, because the authority to grant or withhold permission rests solely with you. But in any case, do send him your editions of my several books & charge to my account, for I would rather he should read my modern works than my ancient ones. Don’t send him anything earlier than ‘The Gilded Age.’ The sketches which he mentions to me are heavy antiquities, & I had forgotten that they existed. Sincerely yours [signature].” (Ex Marcus Collection). Clemens would have left out such "ancient" works as "Innocents Abroad" (1869), "Roughing It" (1872), and short stories such as "Advice For Little Girls" (1867) and "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calavaras County" (1867). "The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today" (1873) by Twain & Charles Dudley Warner satirized greed and political corruption in post-Civil War America.
