(1916-2009) Ukrainian-born Israeli biophysicist, Labor Party politician, 4th President of Israel 1973-78. Immigrated to Palestine with his family in 1925 and settled in Jerusalem. He studied botany, zoology, chemistry and bacteriology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Received M.Sc. 1938 and Ph.D. 1941. In 1939, he graduated from the first Haganah officer’s course, and became commander of the student unit in the field forces. In May 1948, he was appointed commander of the "Heyl Mada" (HEMED), scientific research and development corps. After continuing his studies at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, Columbia, and Harvard, he returned to Israel and became head of the Department of Biophysics at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, an institution he helped found. He developed a method for binding enzymes that helped lay the groundwork for enzyme engineering. Katzir was Chief Scientist of the Israel Defense Forces 1966-68. On March 10, 1973, Katzir was elected by the Knesset to serve as 4th President of Israel. In Nov. 1977, he hosted President Sadat of Egypt in the first official visit of an Arab head of state.
