(1902-1983) Hungarian-born, Jewish-American public official, Assistant Secretary of Defense Nov. 1950-Jan. 1953, highest post ever held by a woman in the national military establishment. She worked with Secretary George C. Marshall on a draft for the Senate Armed Services Committee that became known as the Universal Military Service and Training Bill. Her task was to coordinate the Defense Department's manpower, which had been divided among many agencies. In the early 30s, she worked for primarily in labor and human relations. Named chairwoman of the New York State Constitutional Committee 1937and, in 1938, named by President Roosevelt to a committee to study industrial relations in Great Britain & Sweden, and developed a very successful consulting business. During WW II, she was director of the Office of Defense and regional director of Health and Welfare Services. She was a member of the New York City and State war councils and Secretary of the President's Combined War Labor Board.. She served in numerous government positions including regional director of the War Manpower Commission 1942-45. In July 1944, she was sent to the European Theater of Operations by President Roosevelt as his personal observer. She did the same for President Truman in 1945. After the War, she ran a consulting business.She was awarded the Medal of Freedom 1945, and was the 1st female recipient of the Medal for Merit 1947. In the Korean War, Rosenberg was appointed to a committee to advise former Air Force Secretary Stuart Symington on mobilization policy. In 1968-69, President Johnson appointed her to the Commission on Income Maintenance, which examined all welfare and income support programs. ISP, 10 x 8 bust portrait inscribed with sentiment
