(1874-1960) American financier, son and heir of John D. Rockefeller Sr. Notable philanthropist, he gave over $537 million to myriad causes over his lifetime. He donated land for the United Nations building in New York, and funded restoration of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. He developed Rockefeller Center, created the Rockefeller Foundation, and supported countless charitable endeavors. He had a special interest in conservation, and purchased and donated land for many American National Parks. TLS on 8 x 6 ¼ engraved "The Eyrie/Seal Harbor, Maine" letterhead, august 4 1922, to Dr. George L. Paine, Cambridge, Mass. Rockefeller expreses his personal appreciation of Dr. Paine’s courtesy in preaching at the Congregatrional Church at Seal Harbor on the only Sunday he was in Maine. It was generous of Paine to give the community the benefit of his services and his “minstrations were greatly appreciated.” Rockefeller adds: “The unselfishness of you ministers in being willing to preach whenever asked, irrespective of your own plans or convenience, is a constant lesson to us laymen.” Rockefeller hopes Paine will have time for rest and recreation before the summer is over.
