Description:
(1869-1934) American municipal reformer, diplomat, author, and journalist. Chicago Herald reporter in early 1890s, to Toledo 1897, established successful law practice. Mayor of Toledo 1905-11. Appointed Minister/Ambassador to Belgium by President Wilson, serving 1913-22. When WW I broke out, Whitlock was charged with getting Americans home and attending to diplomatic business of 7 other legations, his position delicate by German occupation of Belgium. He condemned British, French and German militarism and helped dissuade the Belgians from the folly of resistance in Brussels that would have meant the city’s destruction. He worked tirelessly with international relief organizations to better the lot of hard-put Belgians and when he left in 1922 a street in Brussels was affectionately named after him. His adroit performance of his duties won him an international reputation for tact, efficiency, and zeal. Wrote 18 books, inc. several novels and a biography, “Forty Years of It” (1914) and “Belgium: a Personal Record” (1919). Translated his own biography of Lincoln in French (he spoke it fluently) and wrote a widely hailed biography of Lafayette. In retirement he and his wife lived in Europe, spending winters at Cannes and summers on the Belgian coast. ISP, 8 ¾ x 6 ¾ grey-toned portrait handsome bust portrait inscribed to eminent collector Rev. Cornelius Greenway with sentiment, Belgium address and dated August 8 1927. Tipped at top onto 9 ½ x 7 heavy paper. Cornelius Greenway (1896-1968) emigrated from Holland 1914, served in France in WW I, received Purple Heart and Service Medal. Tufts BA 1925, STB 1928. Began collecting autographs, inc. photos, in late 20’s. Universalist minister 1926, served parishes in Taunton & Boston, Mass. Pastor of All Souls Church, Brooklyn, NY 1929-65, affiliated with Natl. Assn. of Congregational Christian Churches 1961.
