(1782-1852) New Hampshire & Massachusetts US Rep 1813-17 & 1823-27. As Massachusetts US Senator 1827-41 & 1845-50, opposed Mexican War & Texas annexation; supported 1850 Missouri Compromise on slavery. Secretary of State 1841-43 (Harrison-Tyler) & 1850-52 (Fillmore), negotiated Webster-Ashburton Treaty. 3 ¾ x 5 address panel from a folded letter addressed in another hand to Rev. William B. Sprague, West Springfield, Mass., franked “D. Webster/U. S. Senate” at top right. Red circular Boston Oct. 15 (no year) postmark top left, penned postal notation in other hand top right. William B. Sprague (1795-1876) Congregational & Presbyterian clergyman, compiled Annals of the American Pulpit (9 vols., 1857-1869), comprehensive biographical dictionary of leading US Protestant ministers who died before 1850. He was also America's foremost philographer, a collector of historical documents and pamphlets, 1st to gather a complete set of autographs of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence (completed Feb. 1833). He gathered a collection of signatures of all members of the 1787 Constitutional Convention, a complete set of autographs of the Presidents, and all officers of the US government from Washington’s through John Quincy Adams’ administrations. This collection inc. signatures of Presidents, Vice Presidents, all members of the President’s Cabinet, all Justices of the Supreme Court, and all foreign ministers. He also collected the signatures of all military officers involved in the American Revolution from all nations. He collected signatures of great men of the Reformation and great skeptics, even owning an autograph of St. Augustine. With copyright 1856 steel engraving of Webster. Two items.
