(1867–1954) USNA 1894, Los Angeles Deputy Assistant District Attorney, Superior Court judge 1903, 19th Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court 1918. 43rd Secretary of the Navy 1924-29 (Coolidge’s first appointee), enlarged and modernized the fleet and established a naval air force which would become a potent component in the war with Japan. When Hoover became president in 1929, he appointed Wilbur to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, serving until his 1945 retirement. His brother Ray Lyman Wilbur was Secretary of the Interior under Herbert Hoover and a president of Stanford University. SP, 9 x 6 Harris & Ewing Studio of Washington bust portrait signed with sentiment under image on 12 ½ x 9 mount. Harris & Ewing ewmbossed stamp at lower left of image and in gilt print on mount.
