(1908-1999) Minnesota lawyer, resident counsel for Mayo Clinic 1950-59. Nicknamed “Old No. 3”, received his commission to fill Abe fortas’ seat following contentious battles over two previous, failed nominations forwarded by Nixon in 1969–1970, G. Harrold Carswell and Clement Haynsworth. Assoc. Justice 1970-94. He authored the Court’s majority opinion in the 1973 controversial abortion decision, Roe v. Wade, for which he was regularly villified. Warren Burger, best man at his wedding, was a long-time friend and both were originally nicknamed the “Minnesota Twins”; Blackmun voted with Burger in 87.5% of closely-divided cases during his first 5 terms (1970-75) and in the final 5 years that Blackmun and Burger served together, he joined Burger in only 32.4% of cases.
