Description: (1926-2009) 3rd US Secretary of Transportation, served Feb. 2, 1973 to Feb.1, 1975. He was Secretary during the 1973 oil crisis. Stanford Ph. D. in economic research, previously a Union Oil Co. (later, Unocal Corp.) executive. In Oct. 1965, after Union Oil and the Pure Oil Co. merged, he was appointed President of Pure Oil and remained in that position when Pure became Union 76. He was elected Senior VP and a member of Union Oil's Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Nominated to the post by Richard Nixon, he also served under Gerald Ford but when Ford said he intended to seek the Presidency, he resigned and returned to Union Oil. Brinegar was on Ronald Reagan's 1980-81 transition team.
