(1824-1900) Tennessee lawyer, US Senator (D) 1875-77, US Postmaster General 1877-80 (Hayes). Enlisted in CSA 43rd Tennessee Infantry, mustered out as a lieutenant colonel, resumed practice of law until 1868. Member of 1870 Tennessee state constitutional convention, in Aug. 1870 elected chancellor of the Chattanooga (3rd) Chancery Division to 1875 when he resigned to accept appointment to a vacant US Senate seat. Defeated in next Senate election in the Tennessee General Assembly, appointed Postmaster General by President Hayes, later US District Court judge. Printed DS, 3 ¾ x 8 receipt for copy of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commissions’s “Atlas of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga battlefields”, adds Chattanooga, Tenn. and “Thanks”. No date but ca. 1897.
