(1891-1971) US Marine Corps General, earned Navy Cross & Distinguished Service Medal while leading the 3rd Marine Division on Bougainville & Guam in WW II. Joined USMC 1913,served in Haiti and in France in WW I. Commanded Marine Forces in North China 1939, and led Marine Detachment, US Embassy, Peiking. Director of Division of Plans and Policies when WW II broke out. In June 1942, commanded Camp Lejeune , training 2 Regimental Combat Teams for the 3rd Marine Division. In October joined newly-formed 3rd Marine Division as Asst. Division Commander, Commanding General on Guadalcanal Sept. 1943. Led Division in landing at Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville, 1943, and in 1944 recapture of Guam. Assigned to USMC HQ as Director of Personnel Sept. 1944, later Assistant Corps Commandant. Final assignment as Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, retired Jan. 1, 1948, advanced to 4-star rank on retirement. SP, 4/7/45 USMC 10 x 8 b&w glossy bust portrait as Major General.
