(1856-1920) US Naval officer, explorer, his claim to have been 1st to reach North Pole 4/6/09, then and now under dispute. Made several expeditions to the Arctic, explored Greenland by dogsled 1886 & 1891, returned there 3 times in 1890s. Twice attempted to cross NW Greenland over the ice cap, discovered Navy Cliff. Studied Inuit survival techniques, built igloos, dressed in furs for heat preservation and to avoid extra weight of tents & sleeping bags. Pioneered use of support teams and supply caches for Arctic travel. During course of his explorations, had 8 toes amputated. His 1898-1902 expedition achievements brought American Geographical Society and Royal Geographical Society of London gold medals for his tenacity, mapping of his considerable discoveries, and 1900 discovery of Cape Jesup at north tip of Greenland. Also achieved farthest north for western hemisphere in 1902, north of Canada's Ellesmere Island. TLS “Peary” on 10 ľ x 8 ˝ red & black imprinted light brown National Aerial Coast Patrol Commission letterhead, Washington, April 21 1917, listing VP Thos. R. Marshall as Honorary Chairman, Peary as Chairman, & several notables on Central Committee, to Baltimore collector. Peary appreciates his “…friendly expressions and your thoughtful courtesy in writing me on the anniversary of my discovery of the North Pole.” Peary adds he is in the best of health and sends wishes for the same.

Condition: Very good, 2 fold starts at right side carefully repaired on verso, slight blot to “P” of signature, very light toning at right & bottom edges
