(1826-1900) Central figure in the Hudson River School of American landscape painters. Student of Cole, known for scenic grandeur of his landscapes, inc. Heart of the Andes, Icebergs, Niagara Falls, etc. Elected as youngest Associate of the National Academy of Design 1848, promoted to Academician 1849. Church traveled in South America 1853 & 1857. One trip was financed by Cyrus Field, who wished to use Church's paintings to lure investors to his South American ventures. Church was inspired by Prussian explorer Alexander von Humboldt's Cosmos; Humboldt challenged artists to portray the "physiognomy" of the Andes. 2 x 4 Autograph Sentiment (“yours truly”) Signed, excellent for framing!
