Description: (1786-1844) Financier & writer, entered University of Pennsylvania at age of 10; diplomatic aide in Paris & London. Prepared explorers Lewis & Clark's notes for publication, etc. Elected President of the Second Bank of the United States in 1823 and his policy of a stropng national bank, stable money supply and restricted credit angered President Andrew Jackson who vetoed renewal of the Bank's charter in 1832. In March 1836 the Bank was chartered in Pennsylvania as a state bank. Biddle resigned as President in March 1839 and retired to his Delaware River estate and was president of the Board of Trustees of Girard College.
Brief 10 x 8 ALS, Philadelphia, June 24, 1836, to Channing Ellis, Newport, Rhode Island, in full: "In answer to the inquiry in your favor of the 22nd inst, I have the pleasure to inform you that the address of the gentleman to whom you allude is Charles Oliver Esq of Baltimore. With great respect, yr NBiddle."
