(1855-1946) Reformer, founded the Anti-Saloon League. Gave up law practice to become a minister after religious conversion. Organized the Ohio Anti-Saloon League 1893, national superintendent to 1903 when the Anti-Saloon League was established nationally 1895. Russell mentored future leaders of the League, inc. Wayne Wheeler & Ernest Cherrington. He also established the Lincoln-Lee Legion to promote signing of temperance pledges by children and young people, and reportedly raised $5M to promote the temperance movement. Russell also authored “A Lawyer's Examination of the Bible”, pub. 1893 and re-released 1935, a work of Christian apologetics that argues evidences for the Bible's authenticity concerning the life, teachings, death & resurrection of Jesus Christ. He believed testimony of the writers of the gospels could be tested by technical legal criteria and that such testimony was trustworthy. State superintendent of the New York state league 1899-1908, held post concurrently with national post to 1903. Autograph Statement Signed on blank 2 ¼ x 5 portion of a postcard, under signature adds “Founder of the Anti-Saloon League of America”, Westerville, Ohio, Sept. 1932. Prohibition, a main goal of the Anti-Saloon League, was then in effect, lasting 1920-1933.
