(1845-1921) Boston-born publisher, President of Houghton Mifflin Co. 1908-21. Raised in one of the most affluent families in Boston, attended Boston Latin School and Harvard University in 1865. Joined Hurd & Houghton publishing house 1868, went on to work in almost every position at Houghton's Riverside Press before becoming a partner in 1872, and head of Riverside Press when Houghton was appointed mayor of Cambridge He continued as partner in successor firms. President of Houghton Mifflin after Houghton’s death in 1895, and successfully reproduced scores of classic titles. In 1908, Houghton, Mifflin & Company restructured itself, changing from a partnership into a corporation, under the name Houghton Mifflin Company. Between 1914-18, Houghton Mifflin published 100+ books related to the War effort, many profitable. Programs to put inexpensive books in the hands of servicemen introduced the habit of reading to a vast number of men. Although the literary tumult of the 1920s passed them by, the company showed more success with nonfiction offerings, and its educational books division thrived. He led the Company through a major transition as enrollment in public schools grew throughout the late 1800s and educational publishing surpassed trade and became its principal focus. It began publishing intelligence quota, or “I.Q.” tests in 1916, and continued to update these best-sellers for decades At the time of Mifflin's death in 1921, Houghton Mifflin's business more than tripled, capacity of the Riverside Press doubled, and book sales soared to $3M+.
