As Massachusetts US Senator 1827-41 & 1845-50, opposed Mexican War & Texas annexation, supported 1850 Missouri Compromise on slavery. Secretary of State 1841-43 (Harrison-Tyler) & 1850-52 (Fillmore), negotiated Webster-Ashburton Treaty. 8 ¾ x 7 ¾ LS as Secretary, Department of State, Washington, August 28 1841, to Thomas Bakewell, New York. Secretary Webster informs Bakewell that passports for he and his family were sent to the NYC Collector of Customs who will deliver them upon receipt of proof of citizenship and a description of “your persons.”
