(1827-1918) New York US Rep, 20th Treasurer of the United States. Born in Utica, NY, graduated from Yale in 1850, editor and proprietor of the Utica Morning Herald 1851-89. A delegate to the 1864, 1868, and 1876 Republican National Conventions, US Rep 1871-75. Defeated for re-election in 1874, he resumed his former newspaper activities in Utica. Assistant Treasurer of the United States 1889-93, president of the Franklin National Bank of New York City 1893-97, Treasurer July 1, 1897-June 30, 1905, when he resigned and returned to banking. Autograph sentiment ((“Yours very truly”) signed on a 2 ˝ x 4 card while US Treasurer, dated February 3 1904 by him.
