(b.1921) American artist known for his brilliantly colored, pseudo-expressionist paintings and screen prints of athletes, musicians and sporting events. Neiman studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago on the GI Bill after serving in the Army in WW II, and was on the faculty for 10 years. He is one of America's most popular living artists, known for his brilliantly colored semi-abstract paintings of sporting events and leisure activities. In 1954, Neiman began his association with Playboy Magazine, for which he still illustrates monthly. Since 1960, he has traveled the world observing and painting athletic competitions. His subjects include: the Olympic Games, Super Bowls, World Series’, the Kentucky Derby, championship boxing, PGA and The Masters golf tournaments, The Ryder Cup, World Equestrian Games, Wimbledon and other Grand Slam competitions. Also, night life, entertainment, jazz, casino gambling, sailing, cuisine, celebrities, famous locations, and America at play. He has sponsored and supported several organizations that foster art activities for underprivileged children such as The LeRoy Neiman Center for Youth in San Francisco and the Arts Horizons LeRoy Neiman Art Center in Harlem. He also has established the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University in New York and scholarships at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has received 5 honorary doctorates and numerous awards, induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, and has authored 12 books of his art. A documentary on his jazz painting, “The Big Band,” premiered in Los Angeles in 2009. Neiman produces works in oil, enamel, watercolor, pencil drawings, pastels, serigraphy, lithographs and etchings. His work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian, Whitney Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the State Hermitage Museum in Russia, Wadham College at Oxford, and in museums and art galleries the world over, and private and corporate collections. Neiman continues to paint despite having his right leg amputated in 2010, the result of a vascular problem. His autobiography, “All Told: My Art and and Life Among Athletes, Playboys, Bunnies, and Provocateurs” will be published in 2012. Frameable 3 x 5 white card dated 1978 by Neiman.
