Description:
(1888-1957) USNA 1912, aviator, explorer, 1st to fly over North Pole 1926 (received Medal of Honor with pilot Floyd Bennett), 1st to fly over South Pole 1929. He learned to fly in WW I during his tour with the Navy. Established Little America base in Antarctica 1928-30. Undertook expeditions to Antarctica 1933-35, 1939-40, and Operations High Jump 1946-47 & Deep Freeze 1955-56. 10 x 8 ISP, sepia ¾-length portrait in uniform, left hand in his pocket, inscribed at top right under November 28 1927 date: “To Miss Sand with very much appreciation [signed] RE Byrd.” Signed between his polar flights and 5 months after his failed attempt to win the Orteig Prize in 1927 for making the 1st nonstop flight between the US and France.
