Description:
(1811-1884) Reformer, prominent abolitionist from 1837, associate of Wm. Lloyd Garrison; president of Anti-Slavery Society 1865-70. Phillips contented that racial injustice was the source of all of society's ills, and, like Garrison, denounced the Constitution for tolerating slavery. In later years advocated prohibition, woman suffrage, Native American rights, penal reforms, regulation of corporations, and organization of the working class. AQS “Liberty & Justice” on 2 ˝ x 4 card, dated February 23 1871 (likely in another hand) at lower left.
