(1912-1993) (Thelma Catherine Ryan Nixon, commonly known as Pat) married Richard Nixon 1940, First Lady 1969-74. As First Lady, promoted charitable causes inc. volunteerism and oversaw the collection of more than 600 examples of historic art and furnishings for the White House. She also encouraged women to run for political offices and became the most traveled First Lady up to that time, visiting about 80 nations, and was the 1st First Lady to visit a combat zone. Her public appearances became rarer in later life as she suffered 2 strokes within 10 years of returning to California and was later diagnosed with lung cancer. 10pp 5 ˝ x 8 Ľ program (with Navy blue & gold tassled cord) for launching of the nuclear-powered guided-missile frigate “California” at Newport News Shipbuilding, Virginia, September 22 1971, christened by First Lady Pat Nixon, signed by her on the front cover. With unsigned 1+pp typed memoir by journalist Sally Steele and article from Enid (Oklahoma) Daily Eagle by Washington correspondent Steele. Cover has black and gilt lettering with gilt symbol at top right, signed at lower right in blue ink.
