(1912-1993) (Thelma Catherine Ryan Nixon, commonly known as Pat) married Richard Nixon 1940, First Lady 1969-74. As First Lady, promoted charitable causes inc. volunteerism and oversaw the collection of more than 600 examples of historic art and furnishings for the White House. She also encouraged women to run for political offices and became the most traveled First Lady up to that time, visiting about 80 nations, and was the 1st First Lady to visit a combat zone. Her public appearances became rarer in later life as she suffered 2 strokes within 10 years of returning to California and was later diagnosed with lung cancer. 3 ľ x 6 ˝ commemorative envelope for the launch and christening (by First Lady Mrs. Nixon) of the nuclear-powered guided-missile frigate USS California, DLGN-36, signed "Pat Nixon". Envelope is postmarked “Christening of the U. S. S. California”, Newport News, Virginia, September 22 1971. With picture postcard and informational folded card.
