(1799-1863) USMA 1820, served as Third Lieut. in Ordnance Corps. In 1821, Ordnance merged with Artillery and he became Second lieut., then first Lieut. and Commissary of Subsistence. Captain of 1st Artillery 1835-46, served in 2nd Seminole War and breveted Major for gallant and meritorious conduct, particularly at San Felasco. Transferred to Quartermaster Dept. 1838, promoted to Major 1842, serving as New Orleans Quartermaster during the Mexican-American War. He was breveted Lieut. Colonel 1848 for meritirious conduct, named chief Quartermaster in Texas 1851-53. Promoted to Colonel 1856 and in 1858 placed in charge of Department of New-York 1858 s Assistant Quartermaster General. MsDS on 10 x 8 blue-grey paper as Major & Quartermaster, New Orleans, October 18 1848, duplicate invoice of quartermaster stores sent to Capt. S. G. French, Quartermaster at Greenwood Island (Pascagoula, Mississippi), on USS Mary Somers. Invoice details 2 wagons complete with bows, feed troughs, buckets, lead bars, 4 horse harnesses, 8 horses, 8 halters, a curry comb, a horse brush, etc. Samuel Gibbs French (18181910) USMA 1843, US Army officer, wealthy plantation owner, author, CSA Major General commanding a division in the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater.
