(1897-1977) German Christian Democratic Union politician, Chancellor of West Germany 1963-1966. In 1944 wrote “War Finances and Debt Consolidation” (which assumed Germany had already lost the war), sent to C. F. Goerdeler, central figure in German anti-Nazi resistance. Post-War economic consultant to US military administration of Bavaria, Minister of Economics in Hegner’s Bavarian cabinet. After US & UK created the “Bizone”, became chairman of an expert commission preparing currency reform, and In 1948 elected Bizonal Economic Council Director of Economics. On June 20, 1948, the Deutsche Mark was introduced, and Erhard successfully abolished price-fixing and production controls enacted by military administration. Elected to 1st West German Parliament 1949, joined CDU. In September, appointed Minister of Economics in 1st Adenauer cabinet. The CDU made his concept of social market economy part of the party platform. After Adenauer’s 1963 resignation, he was elected Chancellor, re-elected 1965. His governing coalition broke and he resigned Dec. 1, 1966, succeeded by Kurt Georg Kiesinger, but her remained in the Bundestag to his death.
