(1889-1967) American Roman Catholic prelate, Archbishop of New York and Cardinal of the Church. Ordained 1916, appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Boston and Titular Bishop of Sila by Pius XI 1932, consecrated by Cardinal Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII, whose old vestments Spellman himself wore), 1st consecration of a US bishop held at St. Peter's. Named 6th Archbishop of New York 1939 and Apostolic Vicar for US Armed Forces. Created Cardinal by Pope Pius XII 1946. During WW II, visited 16 countries in 4 months on behalf of the Pope. Led NY archdiocese through extensive period of building Catholic infrastructure, particularly parochial schools. Staunch opponent of Communism, criticized films he viewed as "indecent." Received The Hundred Year Association of New York's Gold Medal Award 1946 "in recognition of outstanding contributions to the City of New York." Awarded 1967 Sylvanus Thayer Award by the US Military Academy at West Point for his service to soldiers, sailors, airmen & marines. Signed 3 x 5 card likely while Archbishop of New York, undated but early-mid 1940s.
