Description:
(1884-1980) Assoc. Justice 1938-1957. He was the last person to serve as a Supreme Court Justice without possessing a law degree. General Counsel of the Federal Farm Board 1929-32 and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation 1932-35, Solicitor General 1935-38. On the bench, Reed was generally considered a moderate and often held the balance between the liberal and the conservative members of the court in split decisions. He generally adhered to a narrow interpretation of the Constitution in the spirit of the New Deal. Signed 3 x 5 card likely while Associate Justice, undated but ca. early-mid 1940s.
