Price: $75.00

Description:
(1773-1866) Presbyterian minister, inventor, educational pioneer, long-term president of Union College, Schenectady, New York. In 1804, at 31, he became president of Union College until his death in 1866. More than 4,000 students graduated from Union during his tenure. He was also president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 1829-45. His legacy at Union College is recognized by the imposing Nott Memorial, a centerpiece of the College's campus. Around 1802 he was called to the Presbyterian Church at Albany, became a preacher, and was heard by large congregations. Among his successful pulpit efforts at Albany was a sermon on the death of Alexander Hamilton, an oration condemning the practice of dueling. “On the Death of Hamilton” (1804), had profound influence in curtailing the custom. In 1805, the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) conferred upon him the title of D.D. (Doctor of Divinity), and in 1828 he received the degree of LL.D. His publications include collections of sermons, “Counsels to Young Men” (1810), and “Lectures on Temperance” (1847). As a scientist he studied heat and obtained 30+patents for applications of heat to steam engines, but was best known in his day as the inventor of the first stove for anthracite coal, named for him. 4 ˝ x 8 Autograph Quotation Signed in Latin, no place (likely Union College), no date (likely late 1830s-early 1840s), inscribed to a Saratoga Springs, New York collector: “Perseverantia vincit omnia, nee non et in gloriam ducit” (not translated, roughly “perseverance conquers all things and…leads to glory”).
